How the laser works
What Is the Lutronic ULTRA Laser?
Ultra (LaseMD Ultra) is a 1927 nm thulium laser by Lutronic, now Cynosure Lutronic. Its light is absorbed by water in the top layers of skin, where sun damage and dull cells sit. A roller handpiece spreads thousands of tiny treatment points across the area, with untouched skin between them, so the surface renews quickly. The fresh microchannels also help skin care soak in after treatment.

Is it right for you?
Who the Ultra Laser Suits Best
- Sun spots, freckling or blotchy tone on the face, neck, chest or hands
- Dull skin that needs a reset without a week at home
- Ready to wear daily sunscreen before and after
- Happy to plan a series for the best result
Cynosure Lutronic says Ultra can treat all skin types. Darker skin is more prone to dark marks after any laser, so your nurse sets the energy to your skin.
When Another Option Fits Better
- Redness and broken capillaries: Lumecca IPL
- Deeper lines and crepey skin: Opus Plasma
- Loose skin or deeper scarring: Morpheus8
- No downtime, no laser: PRX-T33
Treatment waits if you have a tan or recent sunburn, an active cold sore or skin infection, or took isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past year. It is not a fit during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you form keloid scars, have had radiation to the area, or have an autoimmune condition or weakened immune system that affects healing. If you get cold sores, your provider may suggest an antiviral before treatment.
About Ultra for Thinning Hair
Satori also offers Ultra on the scalp, paired with a growth-factor serum. Hair growth is not part of the laser’s FDA clearance, and the research so far is small, so ask your nurse whether it suits your hair loss.

What is the Lutronic Ultra laser?
Ultra, also sold as LaseMD Ultra, is a 1927 nm thulium laser made by Lutronic, now part of Cynosure Lutronic. It delivers non-ablative fractional energy: thousands of tiny treatment points with untouched skin in between, so the surface heals quickly while sun damage and dullness are treated.
What does Ultra treat?
Sun damage, brown spots, freckles, uneven tone, dullness and fine lines, on the face, neck, chest and other sun-exposed skin. Cynosure Lutronic labels the LaseMD Ultra for benign pigmented lesions such as age spots, sun spots and freckles, plus actinic keratosis, which needs a medical diagnosis first.
Is Lutronic Ultra FDA cleared?
Yes, for specific uses. The FDA cleared Lutronic’s LaseMD 1927 nm thulium laser (510(k) K171009) and the LaseMD LEO (K192331) for soft tissue coagulation, actinic keratosis and benign pigmented lesions such as age spots, sun spots and freckles. Cynosure Lutronic states the same indications for the LaseMD Ultra. Texture, glow and scalp uses are not part of that clearance.
What is the downtime after an Ultra laser treatment?
Most people go straight back to normal activities. Expect redness and warmth that day, then skin that feels dry or rough, like fine sandpaper, as it renews. Cynosure Lutronic says healing typically takes 5 to 7 days before the dryness fades. Satori’s team notes temporary redness or mild flaking for 1 to 2 days.
Does the Ultra laser hurt?
Most people feel warmth and a prickly sensation. Numbing cream can be used for sensitive skin or stronger settings. A full face usually takes 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size of the area.
How many Ultra sessions will I need?
Some people see a change after one session; many plan a series for sun damage and tone. Your nurse sets the number and spacing based on your skin and goals.
Ultra vs Moxi: what is the difference?
Both are non-ablative fractional lasers at the same 1927 nm wavelength: Ultra is made by Cynosure Lutronic and Moxi by Sciton. They target the same surface-level concerns, sun damage, brown spots and dullness, with short recovery. Results depend more on settings, skin care and sun protection than on the brand.
Ultra vs Clear + Brilliant: which is better?
Clear + Brilliant by Solta uses a 1440 nm handpiece for texture and a 1927 nm Perméa handpiece for tone and radiance. Ultra focuses on 1927 nm, the wavelength used for sun damage and brown spots. If texture and scarring are your main goal, a deeper treatment such as Morpheus8 or microneedling with PRP may suit you better.
Ultra vs IPL or BBL: which should I choose?
BBL is Sciton’s brand of intense pulsed light (IPL). IPL, like our Lumecca, works best on visible brown spots and redness, with little surface downtime. Ultra resurfaces the top layer, which also helps texture, dullness and fine lines. Many plans use both, at separate visits.
Is Ultra safe for darker skin tones?
Cynosure Lutronic says Ultra can treat all skin types, all year round. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that darker skin is more prone to burns and dark marks after any laser, so your nurse adjusts settings to your skin type and history.
Can Ultra treat melasma?
Sometimes, as part of a plan. Studies of 1927 nm thulium lasers show melasma can lighten, but it often returns, so daily sunscreen and topical care matter as much as the laser. Your nurse will tell you honestly whether Ultra suits your melasma.
Can the Ultra laser help thinning hair?
Satori offers Ultra scalp treatments that pair the laser with a growth-factor serum. Hair growth is not part of the FDA clearance, and the research so far is small: a 10-person pilot study reported thicker, denser hair, and Cynosure Lutronic has a larger trial under way. Ask your nurse whether it fits your hair loss.
Who should not have Ultra?
Treatment waits if you have a tan or recent sunburn, an active cold sore or skin infection, or took isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past year. It is not a fit during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you form keloid scars, have had radiation to the area, or have an autoimmune condition or weakened immune system that affects healing. If you get cold sores, your provider may suggest an antiviral before treatment.
