Questions

Chemical peel FAQ

Answers from our licensed estheticians. Still have a question? Call or text 866.956.1605.

Korean Coral FCR spicule powder in a gold bowl
Which chemical peel is best for melasma?

Our Brightening & Hyperpigmentation Peel is the starting point for melasma. Korean Coral in its no-peel dark spot version or a Custom Peel may also suit your skin. Gentler options can support a gradual plan for uneven tone. Your esthetician considers your skin tone, sensitivity and current routine before choosing the peel. Melasma can return, so daily SPF and ongoing care matter. TCA is not our melasma recommendation.

Can a chemical peel help acne scars?

A peel may soften the appearance of post-acne discoloration and some surface texture, but dark marks are not the same as indented acne scars. Korean Coral and a Custom Peel are options to discuss for texture; Brightening and gentler peels can support more even-looking tone. No peel promises to erase deep scars. For indented acne scars, ask about a med spa plan with Lutronic ULTRA or Morpheus8. The acne-scar filter shows non-TCA peel options to discuss with your esthetician.

Are your peels safe for all skin tones?

All of our non-TCA peel options can be tailored for all skin tones. Your esthetician still checks your skin, history and preparation, then chooses a suitable formula and strength. Not every peel or depth is right for every person. For darker skin tones, text us at 866.956.1605 before booking so we can steer you to the safest option, including before any TCA.

Which chemical peel is best for acne in San Diego?

For active breakouts, start with our Advanced Acne Peel (salicylic, HSA/FSA accepted). Texture or acne scars often move to the Korean Coral Spicule Peel. Mild congestion can also use Pumpkin Peel Ultra or Lunchtime Glycolic. Your licensed esthetician chooses the strength after seeing your skin. Call or text 866.956.1605 if you are unsure.

Which peel is best for dark spots, melasma or sun damage?

Start with the Brightening & Hyperpigmentation Peel for dark spots, melasma, sun damage and post-acne marks. Your esthetician selects the strength and may recommend the no-peel dark spot version of Korean Coral or a Custom Peel instead. Melasma needs ongoing care and daily SPF; a peel may improve its appearance but is not a cure. We do not recommend TCA as the melasma option on this page.

Which peel is best if I have an event or need no downtime?

Choose Korean Glass Skin Peel, Organic Fruit Enzyme Peel, or a light Lunchtime Glycolic Peel. Pumpkin Peel Ultra may also suit a gentle refresh. Allow time for your skin to settle, especially with a first peel. Book Glass Skin about 1 to 3 days before a big event. Avoid Coral peeling version and TCA the week of photos.

What is a Korean spicule peel?

Our Korean Coral Spicule Peel uses coral-derived spicules (FCR) for physical resurfacing at a medium to deep depth (customizable). Day 1 is very red with heat and tingling. You can choose a peeling version for texture or a no-peel version for dark spots or pigmentation. It is more intense than a lunchtime acid peel.

Is the Pumpkin Peel a chemical peel?

Yes. Pumpkin Peel Ultra layers pumpkin enzyme with 25% mandelic, 10% lactic and 2% salicylic acids. It is a light clinical peel with almost no visible peeling for most people.

What is the difference between a facial and a chemical peel?

A facial focuses on cleanse, extractions, massage and treatment masks. A chemical peel uses acids or enzymes to resurface. At Conjure, most peels include Lux Red Light Therapy and all include a full esthetician visit. Advanced Acne has a separately priced red-light option. Many peels feel like a treatment facial with a targeted peel step. High Frequency is included in our facials; most peels include red light.

How does the Custom Peel work?

Book "I Have No Idea!" Custom Peel when you are not sure. Your esthetician reads your skin and blends the right option that day. Breastfeeding clients are often steered here so we can pick a no-risk blend. Price runs $129 to $169 depending on the blend.

Do you offer VI Peel?

No. We do not carry VI Peel or Perfect Derma. We customize glycolic, salicylic, mandelic, pumpkin enzyme, Korean glass skin, coral spicule and TCA options to your goals instead. Call or text 866.956.1605 and we will match you to the closest fit.

How many peels do I need and how often?

Many guests start with one peel for an event or reset. For acne or pigment, a series of 3 spaced about 2 to 4 weeks apart is common. Your licensed esthetician sets the cadence after seeing how your skin responds. Acne Peel packages (3 for $399) are available.

How should I prepare for a chemical peel?

For most peels, pause retinol, retinoids and strong acids or scrubs for 3 to 5 days. Before a TCA peel, pause them for 7 days and avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks. Pause hydroquinone for 3 to 5 days before Brightening and pigment peels (call or text us if your dermatologist gave different priming instructions). Skip facial waxing for 3 to 5 days. Wait about 2 weeks after Botox or filler, and 2 to 4 weeks after laser or IPL. No Accutane in the last 6 months, or a doctor's note waiving the time period. No active or recent cold sore and no sunburn within the last 10 days; if you get cold sores, take your medication daily for 5 days before and 5 days after your peel. Tell us about pregnancy or breastfeeding. Questions? Call or text 866.956.1605.

What is aftercare like after a chemical peel?

Keep it simple: gentle cleanser, moisturizer and SPF every day. Do not pick flaking skin. Skip the gym, sauna and hot yoga for at least 24 hours after lighter peels (Pumpkin and standard Acne Peel: 24 hours; deeper acne peels: 48 hours; stronger brightening: 5 to 7 days; TCA: no sweating 72 hours and no saunas 7 days). Coral Day 1: expect strong redness and heat; avoid makeup, gym and heat for 24 to 48 hours. Full-block SPF 30+ is required; wait 3 days before using tinted SPF. Restart retinol, acids and hydroquinone only after 10 days or when calm.

How much downtime should I expect?

Day 1 timelines: Organic Fruit Enzyme and Korean Glass Skin glow the same day with no peeling. Lunchtime Glycolic (1 to 2 layers) and Pumpkin usually let you go right back to your day, with possible light flaking. Glycolic at 3 to 4 layers may flake on days 1 to 2, and stronger Brightening on days 3 to 6. Acne Peel: pink for a few hours, light dryness possible. Korean Coral peeling version: very red Day 1, then peels over the next few days. TCA: plan on 3 to 7 days of peeling. You choose intensity with your esthetician before anything goes on.

Can I use HSA or FSA for chemical peels?

Yes for acne peels. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for our Advanced Acne Peel and other acne-focused peels, same as our Advanced Acne Facials and Back Acne Treatments. If your peel is for acne or post-acne marks, tell us at checkout. Call or text 866.956.1605 if you are unsure which booking qualifies.

Are chemical peels safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It depends on the peel. We do not do salicylic peels (including Pumpkin Peel Ultra and Advanced Acne Peel), our Brightening & Hyperpigmentation Peel, or TCA while you are pregnant. Breastfeeding clients: book the Custom Peel so your esthetician can choose a no-risk blend. Korean Glass Skin has a pregnancy-safe version, and Organic Fruit Enzyme can often be adjusted. Always tell us when you book. Call or text 866.956.1605.

What if I use retinol, hydroquinone or Accutane?

Pause retinol and strong acids before your peel (3 to 5 days for most, 7 days for TCA), then restart after 10 days or when calm. Pause hydroquinone 3 to 5 days before Brightening and pigment peels. We need no Accutane in the last 6 months, or a doctor's note waiving the time period. When unsure, call or text 866.956.1605.

How soon after Botox, filler or laser can I get a peel?

Plan on about 2 weeks after Botox or filler on the same area, and 2 to 4 weeks after laser or IPL. Ablative laser needs a longer wait. Call or text 866.956.1605 with what you had and when.

Can I wear makeup after a peel?

After no-downtime peels like Korean Glass Skin or Organic Fruit Enzyme, makeup is fine the same day. After TCA, wait 48 hours. Full-block SPF 30+ is required after any peel; wait 3 days before using tinted SPF. After Coral, skip makeup for 24 to 48 hours while redness settles. If your skin is flaking or very pink, skip foundation until it calms.
